Department of Technical Education, Training and Skill Development, Govt. of West Bengal

About DIT

After nearly two hundred years of exploitation the British left India practically in resourceless after independence. To add to the owe there was influx of a huge number of people both from East and West Pakistan due to partition. A large number of Indians were also recruited by the British for deployment in warfare and these Indians were also left jobless after 2nd World War ended in 1945. So, the new Government at the centre prudently decided that as it was really impossible to create as many employments, let these jobless be made employable by impartment of certain degree of skill in useful trades and occupations. That is why and how Craftsman Training Schemes (CTS) came into being and so Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) were set up throughout the country with the guidance and assistance from International Labour Organisation (ILO). The administrative control of ITIs were with the respective State Governments, but the academic control was with the Union Labour Ministry under the aegis of National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT).

Training under CTS started in West Bengal I 1958 (during 2nd Plan) with only 8 ITIs (which had some primary infrastructure prior to independence) and major expansion took place in this field during the 3rd and 4th Plan.

Now, Directorate of Industrial Training, West Bengal is playing a pivotal role in providing such vocational training through a well-designed network of ITIs (53 Govt ITIs, 78 PTP operated Govt ITIs and 147 Pvt. ITIs ) and is also developing Industry-specific skills on synchronisation of Employers urge thereby accepting their valued advice on priority occupations and inputs into training materials and techniques to substantially improve the relevance of skills developed.

It is therefore imperative that this Directorate of Industrial Training executes the impartment of training in-sync with the demands of Industry with a systematic approach to raise the quality and quantity of Industrial production, reduces unemployment among educated youths leading to vertical escalation to Diploma, cultivates and nurtures a technical and industrial attitude in the minds of younger generations in the State as well as in the Country.
